Games to play with your toddler
You and your toddler will have lots of fun playing these simple games, and they'll help her development, too.
12 to 16 months
Coming to life
Pretend your child's favorite teddy or doll is real—make him walk, go to bed, or dance around the room. Include him in everyday activities—sitting him at the table for dinner, for example, and putting a bib on him. Talking about what you're doing helps your toddler with her language skills. Act out happy and sad times so she can learn about feelings and emotions as she's developing her imagination.
Push me, pull you
If your toddler is pulling himself up and trying to walk, help him practice with a pushing and pulling game. Use a moveable object such as a child-size chair or plastic stacking box filled with soft toys. While he holds the edges for support, you can hold the other side and keep it steady. Then slowly pull the box toward you to encourage him to step forward. Soon he'll start to push while you gently pull. This will build his confidence for the day he finally walks on his own.
Clap happy
By now your toddler can hold her hands open, but it may be a while before she claps independently. For now, clap them together for her, or let her hold your hands while you pat them together. Sit her facing you on the floor or on your lap and sing clapping songs like patty-cake. These will boost her language skills as well as her hand-eye coordination.
Who's hiding here?
Just as he loved peekaboo as a baby, your toddler will love to play simple games of hide-and-seek. First thing in the morning, take turns hiding under the bedsheets. At bath time, use a big towel. For extra fun and giggles, you can gently prod him when he's hiding. Say something like, "Hmm, is this a leg? Or is it an arm?"
Games like this show your toddler that just because he can't see something, that doesn't mean it isn't there. For a change, carry him into another room while he's wrapped up in the towel. He'll be delighted when he pops his head out to discover he's in a new spot.
The magic of sound
Word play increases your child's awareness of sounds and gives her the confidence to try out new words. From books that mimic car sounds to farm animals that moo and cockadoodledoo, there's no shortage of toys that can ignite your child's imagination through sound. Playing games that repeat certain sounds, reading nursery rhymes out loud, and experimenting with different tones and rhythms are other ways you can help your toddler develop language skills—and have fun while she's at it.
16 to 20 months
Tea party
On a sunny day, take a child-size plastic tea set outside and fill a large plastic bowl with water. Pretend you've "come to tea" and have your toddler fill the teapot and pour the tea. Don't expect a dainty tea party—it's likely to be a watery mess. But this fun game will challenge his coordination and he'll be fascinated with the properties of water—for example, that it always flows down, not up.
Block patterns
This requires some concentration on your toddler's part, so it's best played when she's feeling refreshed. Use building blocks to make simple patterns, such as three in a row or "two up, two down" to make a square. Show her how to copy your pattern using other blocks. Then let her come up with her own pattern, which you have to copy. Sorting objects like this into shapes helps your toddler develop problem-solving skills.
Roll it to me
Balls are popular toys for toddlers. Bouncy balls are best kept outside, but soft, foam balls make great indoor toys. Keep a close eye on your child when he's using these—some curious toddlers like to see what they taste like.
The best ball game to start playing with your toddler is an easy version of "catch." Both of you sit on the ground facing each other with your legs apart and toes touching. You can now roll the ball back and forth to each other without it going out of bounds. Fun for building arm muscle strength and hand-eye coordination.
Young collector
Go for a walk together and take a bucket with you. Collect small objects that interest your toddler, like stones, leaves, and pinecones. Your toddler will want to carry the bucket, but don't be surprised if she also dumps its contents and starts again. Toddlers this age love to fill containers just so they can empty them again. Meanwhile, she's practicing her hand movements and developing dexterity.
Baby Shower Games
The time seems to be getting ahead of me again because I can't seem to keep up. I have a million and one things going on from crafts, to decorating, organizing, potty training and the list goes on. For those of you anxiously and patiently waiting for the baby doll bed tutorial, it should be up by Black Friday. And of course, following that will be a heap load of Christmas goodies we have been brewing the past few days.
But to back track a little, I didn't fully get to share all I wanted to about the baby shower. I really really wanted to share this fun and easy game my friend Jen put together. I have never played this one, but it was a big hit! It is your basic matching memory game. You go in a circle one person after the other, to try to match two pregnancy related words. The fun part for everyone was trying to guess the prize for the word. For example, when someone found water breaking they were rewarded Gushers [gross I know]. Or breastfeeding was the Milka bar. This was also a neat little game because I think everyone walked away with a little gift.
And of course we played the dirty diaper game where you melt candy into the diapers and you try to guess what candy is inside. It grosses me out but it was a hoot.
And thanks to Pinterest for providing this fun little activity. We set out some diapers for everyone to write on and people got pretty creative. This would have made changing diapers so much more fun at 2am.
And instead of a guest book, I screen printed Nadia's name onto a onsie and everyone signed it. To get the name on the onsie, use the Freezer Paper Stencil tutorial. I thought this was a little more special and if she ever decided to make a Baby Clothes quilt, this would be a perfect addition.

Peek-a-Boo

When baby is between five- to seven-months old, prop her in a sitting position facing you on your lap. Lower your head and gently touch foreheads with your baby while slowly saying, "Ahh-boom!" at each touch. In time, your baby will anticipate the game by leaning forward before your foreheads meet.
Sooo Big!
Your little one loves it when you lift both his arms up very high and exclaim delightedly, "How big are you? You are so big!" Once your child has learned this game, lift your hands up high and let your child stretch his own arms way upward as you exclaim, "Sooo big!"
Pat-a-Cake
Babies learn to clap both hands together at the body midline between seven and nine months. "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man; bake me a cake as fast as you can…" is an excellent rhyme to chant with your baby. She will enjoy mimicking your clapping, and her confidence will build as she learns the movements and words.

This game can be played with various props but works particularly well with building blocks. Build a tower of blocks with your three- to six-month old and let him knock them down. This game teaches cause and effect—that actions have consequences. And it's lots of fun!

Respond to your baby's burblings with encouraging words as you play "This Little Piggy Went to Market" with her tiny toes. Your baby learns that despite being a small creature, she has control over play situations: Notice how she thrusts out her toes in a clear request to play the game again and again!

Equipment Preferred:
10” Non Stick Frying Pan with lid.
Cutting Board
Large knife
Squeeze bottle
Yummy Ingredients:
1 10” Flour Tortilla
2 Tablespoons of Tomato Salsa
½ cup of cooked BBQ Chicken, diced
1 Tablespoon of Fresh chopped Cilantro (and 1 Tablespoon reserved on the side)
½ cup shredded Monterrey Jack Cheese
½ cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
½ cup diced red peppers.
BBQ Sauce in a squeeze bottle.
Easy Procedure:
Heat pan on range for 1 minute. Spray with non-stick spray and add tortilla. Spread a layer of the salsa leaving a 1-inch boarder that will be “the crust”. Add the chicken & cilantro and then cover evenly with the cheese. Cover the pan with the lid to create steam, which will melt the cheese. Cook until the bottom of the tortilla is browned and the cheese in melted. Transfer to a cutting board & cut pie shape pieces. One of our visitors, Lynn, stated that she filled a clear plastic container (about 50 qt size with disposable diapers) all the same size (size 1) and had people guess how many diapers were in the container. Blindfold each participant and then give them a paper baby to then approach the mom and place the baby as close to the tummy as possible. The one who gets closest to placing the paper baby on the pregnant tummy wins.
9) Bottle Races: (Materials- Baby bottles with Milk or alternate drink). Have each participant take a bottle filled with a liquid and suck the bottle as a baby would. The woman who drinks the most in an alloted time wins the baby shower gift. This baby shower game gets everyone laughing!
10) Baby Bingo: (Materials- Pens, Pre-Printed Bingo cards that use the numbers of how many people attend the baby shower) Prior to opening the baby shower gifts, number each gift on the box starting with one. If you know that 15 people will be attending your shower, pre-print bingo cards with numbers 1 through 15 and randomly place them on 15 cards. When the mommy-to-be's decides to open the presents, she grabs the present she wants to open and reads the number out loud. As soon as someone receives bingo, they win the baby shower game and the baby shower prize.

1) Guess Mom's Tummy Size: (Materials- String or yarn and scissors) Have each woman pull the yarn to the size they believe would fit perfectly around the Mother-To-Be's center of her pregnant tummy. After everyone cuts their string, compare the results to the Mommy-To-Be's actual tummy. Give a prize to the woman who is the most close! This is a baby shower favorite.
2) Never say "Baby": (Materials- baby safety pins or another type of baby object you can place on a string for each woman at the party as well as string or yarn, enough for each woman to wear as a necklace). Have each woman place the necklace with the baby safety pins around her neck when she gets to the party. The rules for this baby shower game are given out at the beginning of the baby shower that whenever someone says the word "baby" during the shower, any woman who calls it out gets a pin from the other woman who stated the word. At the end of the baby shower, the woman with the most pins wins a prize.

Have each woman write down as many baby products as they can name (bottle, blanket, pacifier, etc) within 5 minutes. Sure it is easy at the beginning, but towards the last few minutes, the women will start racking their brains for more :) Give a prize to the woman who gets the most baby products named!
4) Who Can Make The Mother-To-Be's Baby: (Materials - Baby magazines, Scissors, Glue, Paper). Have the women group up into teams of 3 and give each 3 baby magazines. Have them cut out pieces of different baby qualities and put together a picture of what they think the Mother-To-Be's baby will look like. Have the Mother-To-Be pick which baby would possibly look like hers the best! Give prizes to the winning team! One of the top baby shower games!
5) Pin The Sperm on the Egg - (Materials: Click Here to Order) - Check out this wonderfully funny game called Pin The Sperm on the Egg. Just like the old fashion game of pin the tail on the donkey, this new and exciting version will thrill your friends and family at your next baby shower!
6) Guess How Many Safety Pins: (Materials- Safety Pins and Jar). Pass around a jar full of baby safety pins. The one who guesses the closest wins a baby shower prize. A baby shower game favorite!
One of our visitors, Lynn, stated that she filled a clear plastic container (about 50 qt size with disposable diapers) all the same size (size 1) and had people guess how many diapers were in the container. Of course, container and contents go to mom since, as we all know, you can never have enough diapers. This baby shower game is very functional for the mommy-to-be!

8) Place The Baby On The Mommy: (Materials- Cutouts of a baby with tape and blindfold). Another one of our favorite baby shower games is the baby shower version of Pin The Tail on the Donkey. Blindfold each participant and then give them a paper baby to then approach the mom and place the baby as close to the tummy as possible. The one who gets closest to placing the paper baby on the pregnant tummy wins.
9) Bottle Races: (Materials- Baby bottles with Milk or alternate drink). Have each participant take a bottle filled with a liquid and suck the bottle as a baby would. The woman who drinks the most in an alloted time wins the baby shower gift. This baby shower game gets everyone laughing!
10) Baby Bingo: (Materials- Pens, Pre-Printed Bingo cards that use the numbers of how many people attend the baby shower) Prior to opening the baby shower gifts, number each gift on the box starting with one. If you know that 15 people will be attending your shower, pre-print bingo cards with numbers 1 through 15 and randomly place them on 15 cards. When the mommy-to-be's decides to open the presents, she grabs the present she wants to open and reads the number out loud. As soon as someone receives bingo, they win the baby shower game and the baby shower prize.

A bag of baby items are placed in front of the mother-to-be for her to take one item out at a time blindfolded and tell her baby shower guests what item she has in her hands.
