Games to play with your toddler

You and your toddler will have lots of fun playing these simple games, and they'll help her development, too. 12 to 16 months Coming to life Pretend your child's favorite teddy or doll is real—make him walk, go to bed, or dance around the room. Include him in everyday activities—sitting him at the table for dinner, for example, and putting a bib on him. Talking about what you're doing helps your toddler with her language skills. Act out happy and sad times so she can learn about feelings and emotions as she's developing her imagination. Push me, pull you If your toddler is pulling himself up and trying to walk, help him practice with a pushing and pulling game. Use a moveable object such as a child-size chair or plastic stacking box filled with soft toys. While he holds the edges for support, you can hold the other side and keep it steady. Baby Shower Games

The time seems to be getting ahead of me again because I can't seem to keep up. I have a million and one things going on from crafts, to decorating, organizing, potty training and the list goes on. For those of you anxiously and patiently waiting for the baby doll bed tutorial, it should be up by Black Friday. And of course, following that will be a heap load of Christmas goodies we have been brewing the past few days. But to back track a little, I didn't fully get to share all I wanted to about the baby shower. I really really wanted to share this fun and easy game my friend Jen put together. I have never played this one, but it was a big hit! It is your basic matching memory game. You go in a circle one person after the other, to try to match two pregnancy related words. The fun part for everyone was trying to guess the prize for the word. For example, when someone found water breaking they were rewarded Gushers [gross I know]. Or breastfeeding was the Milka bar. This was also a neat little game because I think everyone walked away with a little gift. And of course we played the dirty diaper game where you melt candy into the diapers and you try to guess what candy is inside. It grosses me out but it was a hoot. And thanks to Pinterest for providing this fun little activity. We set out some diapers for everyone to write on and people got pretty creative. This would have made changing diapers so much more fun at 2am. And instead of a guest book, I screen printed Nadia's name onto a onsie and everyone signed it. To get the name on the onsie, use the Freezer Paper Stencil tutorial. I thought this was a little more special and if she ever decided to make a Baby Clothes quilt, this would be a perfect addition. 6 Classic Baby Games

Peek-a-Boo
This game teaches your baby that objects out of sight still exist and can be found—an important cognitive lesson for baby.

Here are some variations of the game:

Hide your face behind your spread-apart fingers.
Peek around the corner of a doorway.
Use a light cloth that baby can pull off easily and victoriously as you call out "Peek-a-boo!"

This game can be played throughout baby's first year of life and into toddlerhood.

Ahh-Boom!

When baby is between five- to seven-months old, prop her in a sitting position facing you on your lap. Lower your head and gently touch foreheads with your baby while slowly saying, "Ahh-boom!" at each touch. In time, your baby will anticipate the game by leaning forward before your foreheads meet.
Sooo Big!

Your little one loves it when you lift both his arms up very high and exclaim delightedly, "How big are you? You are so big!" Once your child has learned this game, lift your hands up high and let your child stretch his own arms way upward as you exclaim, "Sooo big!"
Pat-a-Cake

Babies learn to clap both hands together at the body midline between seven and nine months. "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man; bake me a cake as fast as you can…" is an excellent rhyme to chant with your baby. She will enjoy mimicking your clapping, and her confidence will build as she learns the movements and words.

This game can be played with various props but works particularly well with building blocks. Build a tower of blocks with your three- to six-month old and let him knock them down. This game teaches cause and effect—that actions have consequences. And it's lots of fun!
This Little Piggy

Respond to your baby's burblings with encouraging words as you play "This Little Piggy Went to Market" with her tiny toes. Your baby learns that despite being a small creature, she has control over play situations: Notice how she thrusts out her toes in a clear request to play the game again and again!
